Rysy (2,499 m) is the highest point of Poland and the tallest summit reachable by a marked trail on the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains. The massif in fact has three peaks, and its main summit (2,503 m) already lies on the Slovak side of the border — standing on the ridge between two countries feels remarkably tangible here. The young Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, hiked these mountains too, with Rysy among his favourite destinations. The classic route starts at Palenica Białczańska, runs past Morskie Oko (about 9 km from the trailhead) and then climbs steeply above the Czarny Staw pod Rysami lake. This is an ascent for the well-prepared: from Morskie Oko you gain more than 1,100 metres of elevation, the final sections are secured with chains, and weather in the high-alpine zone can turn in a quarter of an hour. The reward matches the effort — a panorama of the High Tatras from Zakopane to Liptov, with Morskie Oko lying at your feet like a map. The round trip takes 8–10 hours, so set off at dawn. Two mountain huts wait along the way — by Morskie Oko and below Rysy (2,250 m), the highest-located hut in Poland. An entrance ticket to Tatra National Park is required, dogs are not allowed, and in winter and early spring crampons and an ice axe are essential. Book accommodation in Zakopane or a hut — returning after dark on this route is a bad idea.
