Kasprowy Wierch Cableway
Why visit?
Kasprowy Wierch – a Tatra classic that is truly worth visiting Kasprowy Wierch is one of the most recognisable peaks in the Polish Tatras and one of the best places to experience a true high-mountain atmosphere without necessarily being an experienced hiker. The summit rises to 1,987 metres above sea level, between the Western Tatras and the High Tatras. Thanks to the cable car from Kuźnice, visitors can reach the upper station at 1,959 metres in a relatively short time. From there, it is only a short walk to the summit. The greatest attraction of Kasprowy Wierch is the panorama. In good weather, you can see some of the most impressive peaks of the Tatras, including Świnica, Giewont and the Czerwone Wierchy range, as well as vast mountain valleys and the Slovak side of the Tatras. Why is Kasprowy Wierch worth visiting? Kasprowy Wierch is a good choice for both casual visitors and experienced hikers. If you travel up by cable car, you can enjoy the mountain scenery without taking on a demanding ascent. For hikers, Kasprowy Wierch is also an excellent starting point for longer routes. Trails lead towards Świnica, Czerwone Wierchy and Hala Gąsienicowa. Cable car to Kasprowy Wierch The famous cable car starts in Kuźnice, in Zakopane. The route is approximately 4.29 km long and consists of two sections, with a change at Myślenickie Turnie. The upper station is located at an altitude of 1,959 metres above sea level, only a short distance below the summit. The cable car ride itself is part of the experience. As the cabins climb higher, the forests gradually give way to a much more rugged alpine landscape. During the main tourist season, tickets can sell out quickly, so booking in advance is recommended. What can you see at the top? Apart from the spectacular views, one of the most distinctive buildings on Kasprowy Wierch is the High Mountain Meteorological Observatory of the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management. It is the highest meteorological observation point in Poland and has been operating in the area since the 1930s. The upper cable car station also offers a place to rest before continuing your journey. A cable car with a remarkable history Construction of the Kasprowy Wierch cable car began in 1935 and progressed at an extraordinary pace. The first passengers travelled to the summit on 15 March 1936, only 227 days after construction began. At the time, the project was considered a major engineering achievement and one of the most ambitious tourism investments in pre-war Poland. How much time should you allow? If you plan to travel both ways by cable car and spend some time walking around the summit, allow approximately 2–3 hours, not including possible waiting time. If Kasprowy Wierch is the starting point for a longer mountain hike, you should plan for most of the day. When is the best time to visit? Visibility is more important than the season itself. On a cloudy day, the summit may be completely covered in fog. In clear weather, however, the views can be among the most memorable of your entire stay in Zakopane. Before visiting, check: the mountain weather forecast, current trail conditions, notices from Tatra National Park, the operating status of the cable car, live webcams from Kasprowy Wierch. Even in summer, conditions at almost 2,000 metres can be very different from those in central Zakopane. Getting to Kasprowy Wierch The lower cable car station is located in Kuźnice. The easiest way to reach Kuźnice is by local public transport or taxi. During busy periods, it is worth arriving early, particularly if you have a ticket for a specific departure time. Kasprowy Wierch in winter In winter, Kasprowy Wierch becomes one of Poland's best-known high-mountain skiing areas. Ski runs are located in the Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa valleys. Because of the altitude and alpine terrain, conditions are very different from those found at typical lowland ski resorts. Even if you do not ski, Kasprowy Wierch can be spectacular in winter when the weather is clear. Interesting fact The cable car station buildings were designed by Anna and Aleksander Kodelski. The upper station still preserves architectural details dating back to the opening of the railway in 1936. The entire cable car was built in only around seven months, making it one of the most impressive infrastructure projects in the history of Polish mountain tourism. Is Kasprowy Wierch worth visiting? Definitely. Kasprowy Wierch combines two things that rarely go together: spectacular high-mountain scenery and relatively easy access. You can visit simply for the views, use it as the starting point for a full-day mountain hike or experience the Tatras from almost 2,000 metres above sea level. When the weather is good, few places around Zakopane offer such impressive views with so little effort.
