Why visit?
Babia Góra National Park, established in 1954, protects the massif of Babia Góra with Diablak (1,725 m) — the highest peak of the Polish Beskids, known as the Queen of the Beskids and the Mother of Bad Weather. It is one of the smallest national parks in the country (less than 34 km²), yet in 1976 it became one of Poland's first UNESCO biosphere reserves. The upper tree line drops unusually low here: the dwarf-pine and subalpine-meadow belt begins at around 1,400 m, so vegetation typical of much higher mountains can be admired without alpine experience. A dense network of trails leads to Diablak from Zawoja, Krowiarki Pass or Hala Krupowa; the classic route is the red Main Beskid Trail via Sokole Skoki and the Perc Akademików path. Halfway waits the Markowe Szczawiny mountain hut, one of the oldest in the Beskids, steeped in the atmosphere of inter-war mountaineering. In clear weather the summit opens a panorama from the Tatras to Little Fatra, while fog can roll in suddenly even on a sunny morning — Babia Góra has a well-earned reputation as one of Poland's most capricious mountains. Access to the trails is paid: 10 PLN standard, 5 PLN reduced, children under 7 free of charge; tickets are sold online (mPay) and at the park desk. The round trip from Zawoja takes about 4–5 hours, from Krowiarki Pass just under 3 — plan a full day. Dogs are not allowed on the trails. The busiest time is summer holidays and long weekends, and in winter the route demands experience and proper gear. Bring water, a hat and a jacket — the weather here can change within an hour.
