Why visit?
Wolin National Park is Poland’s only national park located entirely on an island: it covers almost 11,000 hectares in the west-central part of Wolin, between the Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Lagoon. The park’s showpieces are its cliffs — among the highest on the whole Baltic coast, reaching up to 95 metres — which you can admire from the trails running along the edge. White-tailed eagles circle above the coast; together with the sea holly they feature in the park’s logo. Beyond the cliffs, Wolin offers entirely different landscapes. The Turquoise Lake fills a former chalk quarry — chalk suspended in the water gives it a milky-blue colour worthy of mountain tarns. About 287 steps through beech forest lead to the Kawcza Góra viewpoint, one of the most famous balconies over the sea, and Międzyzdroje is home to a show enclosure of European bison, Europe’s largest land mammal, which you can observe up close. Beech and mixed forests combine with peat bogs and meadows — the result of the island’s colliding microclimates. Entry is paid on selected areas (including the Kawcza Góra trail), and tickets are most conveniently bought in the park’s online shop. As in every Polish national park, dogs are not allowed on the trails. The best time to come is May–June, when the meadows bloom, and September–October, when the cliffs blaze with colour and Międzyzdroje empty out. A shorter trip to Kawcza Góra takes 2–3 hours; for a full day combine the cliffs with the lake and the bison enclosure.
