Why visit?
Wawel is a limestone hill on the Vistula that for centuries served as the heart of the Polish state: an early medieval stronghold of the Vistulan tribe stood here, kings later resided on the hill, and monarchs were crowned and buried in the cathedral. The complex is Kraków's most precious monument and, together with the Old Town, entered the UNESCO list in 1978 among the world's first inscriptions. The hill and its courtyards can be walked free of charge at any time — you only pay for individual attractions. The hill's silhouette is guarded by Wawel Cathedral, the national sanctuary with crypts holding the tombs of kings as well as Tadeusz Kościuszko and Marshal Józef Piłsudski. Next to it rises the bell tower with the Sigismund Bell — Poland's largest bell, cast in 1520 and weighing nearly 13 tonnes, whose voice accompanies the country's most important ceremonies. At the foot of the hill waits the Dragon's Den, a cave tied to the legend of the Wawel Dragon and the cunning cobbler Dratewka, while by the river a dragon sculpture breathes real fire — children's favourite photo spot. Allow half a day to explore the hill calmly: the cathedral, the courtyards, the quiet corner behind the cathedral with the best view of the Vistula, and optionally the Dragon's Den. The hill stays open until 19:00, and tickets for the cathedral and the cave are bought separately; the castle exhibitions have their own prices and schedule. The site is at its most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the buildings reflect in the river and the morning crowds have gone. From the Main Market Square you reach Wawel on foot in under 15 minutes.
