The European Solidarity Centre tells the story of Solidarity through people, documents and objects rather than dates alone. Its permanent exhibition follows the birth of the movement, everyday life under communism and the changes that contributed to the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. ## What to see The exhibition combines archival photographs, manuscripts, projections and interactive installations. Look for the Twenty-One Demands, now part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme, and for objects connected with the Gdańsk Shipyard. If weather allows, continue to the viewing terrace to understand the relationship between the centre, Solidarity Square and the shipyard area. The visit works for city breaks and educational trips even when visitors do not know the whole history of the Polish People’s Republic. It shows how large political changes grew from decisions made by workers, organisers and families under pressure. From May to September the permanent exhibition is open Monday to Friday 10:00–19:00 and weekends 10:00–20:00. From October to April Tuesday is closed and the remaining hours are shorter. Allow about two hours; accessible routes may take 2.5–3 hours. The building is open without a ticket, but exhibitions require admission. The underground car park may be free for up to four hours with an exhibition ticket.
